Frank Schickedanz

Tiger  -  You are correct  -  We have had a couple of good weeks at the Schickedanz House both  COWBOYS   &  the BRONCOS  -  The one that was most important was the San Diego (Los Angeles) win  -  actually just as long as we beat Phillip Rivers.  I am on a plane right now - we're on our way to Cincinatti  -  1st the BRONCOS at the Bengals Sunday and then Monday Morning we will get up early and go to Canton, OH to visit the NFL Hall of Fame - The Boys and my Bucket List.  The last and only time I was there (1990) there were no BRONCOS in the HOF  -  now there are 3 I believe.  Lots of COWBOYS..  We should have a good time.

I haven't talked to Blanton since the earthquake  -  Hope everything is OK.

Here is a Salute to George H W Bush  -  another Great American  -  RIP.  Better Close it down  -  they are telling me we are descending.  Go BRONCOS .  Talk to you later.

FLS  (Schick)

I'd like to celebrate with you, Frank, but I don't do NFL (for multiple reasons).  Say 'Hello' to a couple of my Army buddies there in Canton.

Does Carol not allow you to post at home?  Seems like you're always descending in a plane headed to "work" when we hear from you.

So what else is on the Bucket List?  Sky Diving?  If you're not already incontinent, it could be a whole new experience.

Congrats on the 70, Vicki.

Have you checked the Closings and Cancellations?   EVERYTHING!   Couldn't help but notice the listing for  Custer's Last Stop  in Ansley.  Did you not get the news in Ansley?

I remember Joe Greeno showing up at all our  Baseball games in the summer time. He would sit over by third base with his stop watch. Joe was timing us from home plate to 1st base .

There's nothing like Joe Greeno and baseball memories to get a guy to post on the Forum.  Joe was one of a kind, he had a wealth of baseball knowledge and had his own style of coaching.  A little rough with his language at times, but I think that actually added to his appeal for all those young players.  As I recall Joe had a practice weekly with every Little League and Pony League team in Kearney. He was deadly accurate with that fungo bat and kept you on your toes.

Joe also came from a family of famous Nebraska coaching legends.  I think his brother Woody gained a lot of fame in the Lincoln area.  It might be safe to say Joe's language could make a longshoreman blush.  It would have been very entertaining to have had Joe be a color person on KGFW broafcasting Kearney Legion baseball.

You are correct Dick. Woody Greeno was a Nebraska Wesleyan coaching legend. Does anyone remember Joe Greeno's boxing class in 10 grade PE?  Seems like he arranged an epic matchup with Rick Freese and Mike Johnson?  As I recall it didn't end well for Mike.

Joe had a way of doing his style of social engineering.  He liked to create matches to teach us life lessons, like not making him mad.  One of my matches was Bob Caldwell when he was a Senior and somehow I survived possibly due to the fact he may have been suffering  with a hangover which slowed him down.  Thank God it was first period, he might have sobered up closer to mid-day and my survival would have been in doubt.

Lefty...

I too remember how accurate he was with that fungo bat. It was amazing.

.Dick K.

I think it was Doug Wilson who told me how Greeno matched up the "bully" of the p.e. class with a really good boxer to teach him a lesson. I think he said Greeno had them box 3 or 4 times and the bully was knocked senseless every time. He said during their last bout the good boxer stopped and started to take off his gloves. Greeno asked him what he was doing and he said he was tired of hitting him. In classic Greeno he said hit that son of a bitch hit that son of a bitch. Can't you just hear him saying that even today?

Like I said Greeno stories are worthy of a Mini.  Do you remember, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make that SOB float on his back" or his daily targeting of at least one kid, usually a dfferent kid each time, to let them know they are the ugliest kid he ever saw?  I got the feeling that Joe might have been a semi-pro ballplayer who got into teaching after his career faded.

Joe Mettenbrink

Yes-no doubt Joe Greeno didn't really give a "damn"-said what he wanted & did almost the same & still kept his job-doubt in this day & age he would've but overall learned to be alittle tougher maybe-for the future-even if hated the boxing part & too much of a "book-worm" to go out for after school sports-(more into chess really-with "Yasi-foreign exchange student (in our sophmore year I think) evidently-not really contact sports but did like volleyball anyway-can't remember if we had a "mixed team" for that?!

Barbie,  Dick,  Some of the Greeno stories (mine in particular) really do need to be told at a mini, and maybe not in mixed company.

As long as we're on the subject,

Who was Coach of the Year in 1966?

(this might surprise you)

Who flew 23 combat missions in a B-29 squadron, one of his last missions with the Enola Gay over Hiroshima, Japan ?

Dick Garrelts

Do you remember some of these KHS Hall of Fame inductees:

Tom Heller (RIP)  1967 Athlete of the Year.  Still a legend.

Riley Harris, The winningest coach in KHS history, with many accolades.

Dennis Long,  Became Athletic Director  1973 - 1999.  Also with honors.

Joe Elliott,  a 3 sport standout at KHS, a track star at UNL, and 24 year School Board member and unsuspecting sponsor of the Rowdy Section.

12/04/18 09:14 PM #8380

Dick Garrelts

The ROWDY Section  STILL  Cares Scholarship Fund stands at $10,899.70  That's only 43% of the $25,000 goal.

The 50th Anniversary of the Rowdy Section is about a month away.  Here's what we DON'T know so far:

The Date

The program

If the kiosk will be dedicated

If the ROWDY SECTION sign will be completed

If there will be commemorative T-shirts, caps, and pins available

If the 1969 Cheerleaders and Drill Team will do cartwheels

If Schick will show up

etc,

etc,

What we DO know:

The Class of 70 will have a 50th ROWDY mini !!

...... If Danny still has the Boones Farm and Cherry Sloe Gin in the fridge.

And      If Vicki has some of those cookies left over, we'll have a Retirement Party for Tiger too.

I will take a wild guess and say Greeno was coach of the year in 1966.

Joe ,you opened up a can of worms by mentioning Greeno on the forum.

Dick Garrelts

You are correct, Tiger.

It was Joe (not to be confused with Broadway Joe) Greeno in 1966.

I'm just being polite calling you Tiger.  I have another name for you.

My guess is your therapist gave you that handle.  Doubt it was a girl.

Naming coaches could bring a flood of memories to the forum.  Gerald Krueger, Bulldog Turner, Jack Ramey,Earl Jensen,Dick Hansen, Tom Rine and before our time John Rumbagh etc.  I think Marion Morrow was a wrestling coach before Ramey.  Two classmates can surely fill in the blanks on the faculty members who were long time assistants.  Riley Harris received a lot of recognition from the state association for his contributions to coaching.  This is a question for the Northeast elementary classmates----Which faculty member raised ducks southeast of the school.  Tiger had a fellow Kenwood Alumni keep him out of trouble in his early career (a 69'er) and two other 69'ers corrupting  him given the opportunity (RE and LR).

Ramey became a General in the Nebraska Army National Guard.  I happened to be at Bico's when he and others celebrated the promotion.

Dick Hansen managed the Intramural Basketball program for many years.  Remember those teams during the 69 and 70 seasons?  'Shirts' and 'Skins', and heart shorts!  A lot of talent went intramural as opposed to Varsity. We could do that and be Rowdys too.

Hansen also raised ducks.

Tiger's mentor was Gale Epp.  Gale was National Champion at the collegiate level.  Very humble about it, and all around good guy.
