FYI     recently retired Chuck (lousy pay but a great title) Salestrom -  Area Associate Vice President of Public Information and Marketing at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, will be doing a presentation at UNK on October 24.    It's free, and open to the public.

Where can we get a signed book, Chuck?

Happy birthday Ron!  Hope you had a great day!

i read about Chuck's presentation in the Hub!  Was hoping I could go but it looks like it won't happen!  Need to appear for Tyler and then take my Mom to PT!  Chuck and Kristi's daughter went to school with Lindsay!  I would have liked to visit more with them last Friday but didn't get it done!  Hopefully at the 50th!

Were headed to Calamus to close up and winterize Mom's cabin and Dad's boat!  Hopefully the weather will be good all day!  Hoping to go to Bow and say hi to Lindsay!  A little out of the way but always worth it!

I worked at the law firm who handled the prosecution at the 2nd trial of Simants. I read the article on Chuck. I didn't remember that part of the trial. Interesting article

To All:

I got this in an email a couple days ago and thought it was pretty cool  -  Take a look and see what you think:

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it.. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

 How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.

Ignition switches on the dashboard.

Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.

Real ice boxes.

Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.

Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.

Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

 Older Than Dirt Quiz :

Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom.

1. Blackjack chewing gum

2.Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water

3. Candy cigarettes

4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles

5. Coffee shops or diners with tableside juke boxes

6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers

7. Party lines on the telephone

8 Newsreels before the movie

9. P.F. Flyers

10. Butch wax

11.. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels...[if you were fortunate])

12. Peashooters

13. Howdy Doody

14. 45 RPM records

15. S& H greenstamps

16. Hi-fi's

17. Metal ice trays with lever

18. Mimeograph paper

19. Blue flashbulb

20. Packards

21. Roller skate keys

22. Cork popguns

23. Drive-ins

24. Studebakers

25. Wash tub wringers

If you remembered 0-5 = You're still young

If you remembered 6-10 = You are getting older

If you remembered 11-15 = Don't tell your age,

If you remembered 16-25 = You' re older than dirt!

I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

Just so you will know  -  I remembered every one of those.  I know this is pretty long but I enjoyed it.  Talk to you later  -  GO BRONCOS

I haven't check the message forum for about a month.  Mrs 'O" and I took a little vacation to Palm Springs and Las Vegas for a couple of weeks.  I was sorry to read about Dick Jensen.  We had a few clasess together . . . he was a  nice guy. . . as I recall he was always kind to everyone.   I think he was in a band but maybe I'm thinking about someone else.  Sad to say but I also scored pretty high on the "do you remember" questionaire.

While in LV we found a Husker bar to watch the game.  Pretty large bar close to the airport with about 10-15 TV's all showing the Nebraska game.  The Las Vegans for Nebraska Club rent out the bar for each Nebraska game . . . probably around 100 Nebraska fans.  Made us feel like we were in a Nebraska bar.

Hope everyone is doing well but we need a Husker win.

Schick...you are older than mud !!! Black Jack & Beemans & Yucatan gum too.

Great World Series. Rooting for Nationals in game 7.

Tiger  -  Well The Nationals did it  -  pretty cool.  After the Astros beat the Yanks I really couldn't root for them even though I am an American League fan.  By the way they played -  they probably would have beaten my Yanks and I would have been more upset than I was when the Atros beat them.  It's cool with all the dynamics of the Nats  -  Hats off to them.  Better go to work  -  gotta make a living and support our habits (Traveling, Eating, Drinking and Kids)  -  Talk to you later.  GO BRONCOS.

Ron  -  You are correct  -  This weekend was a GREAT DAY at the Schickedanz House  -  The BRONCOS finally won a game and the COWBOYS squeeked one out  and One of my Two Fantasy Teams won.  I wish I had been traveling but we're getting ready for Dane's Wedding.  I will be in Grand Island a couple days over the Thanksgiving Holiday for my Sister's 50th Wedding Anniversary  -  Just so you know  -  I actually sang in her Wedding in 1969.

To All  -  Here is something that was sent to me via email and would like to share it:

History Lesson: Veterans Day

Prior to the establishment of the formerly known Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 marked the end of “the war to end all wars.” It followed World War I, or “The Great War” and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

In 1938, legislation was passed to make November 11 a legal holiday, which was celebrated and known as Armistice Day. Its purpose at the time was to honor veterans of World War I. However, after realizing that World War II required the greatest mobilization of all military branches, veteran service organizations urged Congress to pass legislation in 1954, to include all veterans, hence the change from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day.”

In October of 1938, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” to ensure observance of all veterans.

In June of 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was signed to allow three-day weekends to federal employees by celebrating four major holidays, one of them including Veterans Day. Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October.

The first Veterans Day caused lots of confusion in the U.S., as it was celebrated on October 25, 1971. This prompted President Gerald R. Ford to return the observance date to November 11, beginning in 1978. This notion garnered lots of support from veterans and citizens, since that original date had historical significance.

Veterans Day is now commonly regarded as a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

*Important Note: Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day, even though the days have significantly different meanings.

  • Veterans Day celebrates those who previously served in the military.
  • Memorial Day honors servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service.was unaware of all the

I was unaware of Tue History of Veterans Day and thought it was interesting.  Better go to Work  -  Talk to you later  -  Go BRONCOS .

Mayor Marsh won a second term, I'm not Mayor  of Loveland. What an amazing experience,  I did not wear enough flannel I guess.  I still have 2 years on my term, so work to be done yet.  I am AOK with it.

Kathi,  That's probably a job you DON'T want anyway.  It must be reassuring tho that so many voters had confidence in you, as did we.  We're proud of you!

Please note, the 17 Presidential candidates aren't wearing flannel either.

I haven't really looked them over yet to notice flannel or not.  Sara Palin wore flannel didn't she?

So sorry you are not Mayor, Kathi!  I know you would have been a great one for Loveland!
Schick, I didn't know you sang, other than your German beer song!  Are you singing at the 50th anniversary party?

i have been trying to locate several classmates, with help from all of you!  Today I found out John Johnson passed away in 2017!  His sister-in-law, Chris, is a teacher at KHS so I contacted her and she let me know!  I have moved his profile into the In Memory section of our site.

Your OTD quiz was good Frank.  I missed one...can't say I ever watched a Hoody Doody show.  To expand on the Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, we lower our flag to half-staff until noon on Memorial Day and then to full-staff the rest of the day. Full-staff all day for Veteran's Day. Until we put up a flag pole last year, we didn't really think about the difference between the two days.  Like you said, Memorial Day is to honor those who are no longer here...Vet's Day for all who have served.

Another fact I didn't know was that only 7% of living Americans are or have ever served in the military.  I attended a luncheon at Luke Airbase yesterday and the keynote speaker brought that up in her remarks, a female fighter pilot. I honestly didn't believe it so when I got home I googled it and found it was true. 3.1% Army;  1.7% Navy; 1.4% Air Force; and .08% Marines.  I guess there are so many Veterans out here that I thought the numbers would be much higher. Heck, we have 6 Marines within a 3 block radius of where we live.  Enough of that...maybe 93% of you don't care:)

Looking forward to the 50th next year...I hope we have a good turnout.  50 years since HS is kind of a big deal. Who would have thought we'd have made it this far back then!!!

Good news on the home front...Vickie is finally leaving Walmart after 30+ years.  Two days next week and then it's over๐ŸŽ‰

Thanks to all who served our country!  So proud to have you as classmates!

Congratulations to Vickie for retiring!  I know she will enjoy it once she adjusts!  Gary, I was surprised by the statistics you gave for percentage served!  Amazingly low!

Stay warm everyone!  Supposed to be 2 degrees in Kearney when we get up tomorrow!  I keep telling John I'm ready to head south.  I hate being COLD!

For those classmates that served our great country . . .  thank you for your military service!

11/12/19 08:20 AM #9132

Jerry Ohlmann

Just another little know fact regarding Veterans Day.  The armistice between Germany and Allied nations was signed or went into effect at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month 1918.  That is why many Veteran Day celebrations have a moment of silence at 11:00 AM.
