Ron  -  You are correct  -  This weekend was a GREAT DAY at the Schickedanz House  -  The BRONCOS finally won a game and the COWBOYS squeeked one out  and One of my Two Fantasy Teams won.  I wish I had been traveling but we're getting ready for Dane's Wedding.  I will be in Grand Island a couple days over the Thanksgiving Holiday for my Sister's 50th Wedding Anniversary  -  Just so you know  -  I actually sang in her Wedding in 1969.

To All  -  Here is something that was sent to me via email and would like to share it:

History Lesson: Veterans Day

Prior to the establishment of the formerly known Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 marked the end of “the war to end all wars.” It followed World War I, or “The Great War” and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

In 1938, legislation was passed to make November 11 a legal holiday, which was celebrated and known as Armistice Day. Its purpose at the time was to honor veterans of World War I. However, after realizing that World War II required the greatest mobilization of all military branches, veteran service organizations urged Congress to pass legislation in 1954, to include all veterans, hence the change from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day.”

In October of 1938, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” to ensure observance of all veterans.

In June of 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was signed to allow three-day weekends to federal employees by celebrating four major holidays, one of them including Veterans Day. Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October.

The first Veterans Day caused lots of confusion in the U.S., as it was celebrated on October 25, 1971. This prompted President Gerald R. Ford to return the observance date to November 11, beginning in 1978. This notion garnered lots of support from veterans and citizens, since that original date had historical significance.

Veterans Day is now commonly regarded as a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

*Important Note: Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day, even though the days have significantly different meanings.

  • Veterans Day celebrates those who previously served in the military.
  • Memorial Day honors servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service.was unaware of all the

I was unaware of Tue History of Veterans Day and thought it was interesting.  Better go to Work  -  Talk to you later  -  Go BRONCOS .

Mayor Marsh won a second term, I'm not Mayor  of Loveland. What an amazing experience,  I did not wear enough flannel I guess.  I still have 2 years on my term, so work to be done yet.  I am AOK with it.

Kathi,  That's probably a job you DON'T want anyway.  It must be reassuring tho that so many voters had confidence in you, as did we.  We're proud of you!

Please note, the 17 Presidential candidates aren't wearing flannel either.

I haven't really looked them over yet to notice flannel or not.  Sara Palin wore flannel didn't she?

So sorry you are not Mayor, Kathi!  I know you would have been a great one for Loveland!
Schick, I didn't know you sang, other than your German beer song!  Are you singing at the 50th anniversary party?

i have been trying to locate several classmates, with help from all of you!  Today I found out John Johnson passed away in 2017!  His sister-in-law, Chris, is a teacher at KHS so I contacted her and she let me know!  I have moved his profile into the In Memory section of our site.

Your OTD quiz was good Frank.  I missed one...can't say I ever watched a Hoody Doody show.  To expand on the Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, we lower our flag to half-staff until noon on Memorial Day and then to full-staff the rest of the day. Full-staff all day for Veteran's Day. Until we put up a flag pole last year, we didn't really think about the difference between the two days.  Like you said, Memorial Day is to honor those who are no longer here...Vet's Day for all who have served.

Another fact I didn't know was that only 7% of living Americans are or have ever served in the military.  I attended a luncheon at Luke Airbase yesterday and the keynote speaker brought that up in her remarks, a female fighter pilot. I honestly didn't believe it so when I got home I googled it and found it was true. 3.1% Army;  1.7% Navy; 1.4% Air Force; and .08% Marines.  I guess there are so many Veterans out here that I thought the numbers would be much higher. Heck, we have 6 Marines within a 3 block radius of where we live.  Enough of that...maybe 93% of you don't care:)

Looking forward to the 50th next year...I hope we have a good turnout.  50 years since HS is kind of a big deal. Who would have thought we'd have made it this far back then!!!

Good news on the home front...Vickie is finally leaving Walmart after 30+ years.  Two days next week and then it's over๐ŸŽ‰

Thanks to all who served our country!  So proud to have you as classmates!

Congratulations to Vickie for retiring!  I know she will enjoy it once she adjusts!  Gary, I was surprised by the statistics you gave for percentage served!  Amazingly low!

Stay warm everyone!  Supposed to be 2 degrees in Kearney when we get up tomorrow!  I keep telling John I'm ready to head south.  I hate being COLD!

Just another little know fact regarding Veterans Day.  The armistice between Germany and Allied nations was signed or went into effect at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month 1918.  That is why many Veteran Day celebrations have a moment of silence at 11:00 AM.

Jerry  -  Just so you know  -  There is a Season in Germany called  "FASCHING SEASON" (Dick knows) that starts a the same time  November 11th,  11:00 AM,  11th Minute  -  you get it.  It starts then and lasts until Ash Wednesday just like Mardi Gras  -  it just lasts a little longer than Mardi Gras.  The Old Tradition of FASCHING was a little more involved.  Interesting.

Gary  -  I was totally amazed at your 7% Statistic.  It seems like I know thousands of Men and Women that served  -  I really thought is would have been much higher.  Thanks for the info.

Vickie  -  Congratulations on your Retirement  (That is not a 4 Letter Word)  -  Way to go.

Kathi  -  Too bad about the election  -  We are all proud of you   -  just getting to that stage.  Better go to Work (That is a 4 Letter Word)  -  .  Talk to you later  -  Go BRONCOS

Good morning!

Just wanted to let anyone that may be interested know, that Vickie Klein has a Caring Bridge page set up to follow Mike’s recovery and health status. Keep him in your prayers as it sounds as though his recovery could be long. A good friend of mine’s son is neighbors to Mike and Vickie in Holdrege and I have felt so sad for Mike and his family since I learned of his fall, skull fractures and hemorrhagic stroke. ( not sure how to actually get on Caring Bridge, but I believe you would just type in his name in the search category)...I will try it later.

Kathi, sad that the mayor vote didn’t go like it should have ๐Ÿ˜•....you would have been outstanding! God may have other great plans for you! You have a true passion and commitment to the city of Loveland! ๐Ÿ’›

For those World War II buffs . . . I just finished an excellent book titled "The Jersey Boys" by Sally Mott Freeman.  A documented story of 3 brothers serving in the Navy and all fighting the war in the Pacific against Japan.   It does contain some gruesome detail of how Japan treated our POW's and how the war was fought and won. It was researched and written by the daughter of one of the brothers. It's a must read of you like World War II history.

Susie got an email through her church requesting prayers for Cindy Foote. She has a huge blood clot from her knee to her groin.  It is very serious. She is in ICU, and has to have a procedure done every 24 hours until it is dissolved. Small clots have moved to her lungs. Please keep her, Jerry and their family in your prayers๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Jerry sent message today that said they got about 2/3 of the clot with the procedure last night. They have to contend with the one in the abdomen tonight at 5. A friend of mine talked to Cindy last night. She was upbeat and sounded positive. She was excited all three of her boys had arrived. Continue to pray for her!

I visited Mike Klein today.  He's in Room 217 Madonna Rehab, 5401 South Street, Lincoln.  He's alert and Vicki is sharing his room 24/7 so he's getting the attention he needs.  I'd say we had a nice visit but since I did all the talking, Mike may not agree.   His speech and the rest will come with time.  Vicki is prepared for them to be there for several months so those who can, pls feel welcome to stop in and brighten his day.  He knows everyone is thinking about him and appreciates your prayers.  Happy Thanksgiving, all.  (https://www.mapquest.com/us/nebraska/madonna-rehabilitation-hospital-8420737)
